Will You Quit Your Job if You Can’t Work From Home Anymore?
If you said yes, you’re not alone. Thirty percent of remote employees said that they would quit if forced to return to the office according to a study by Live Career. I guess we’ve all gotten just a bit used to the freedom and flexibility that this past year has provided us. And most people are not entirely eager to give that up (at least not completely).
As we emerge from the pandemic and start to slowly transition back to office, many companies are in the midst of detailing what their new remote work strategy will look like moving forward. A McKinsey study noted that between 20 to 25 percent of the workforce could likely continue with remote work between three and five days a week. It seems that many companies are entertaining this type of hybrid approach- a combination of both remote and in-person work. This could come in a variety of forms- such as some employees going into the office for a few days a week while staying home for the rest, or having some team members work remotely while others return to the office full-time, as examples. There will likely be many variations, and organizations will be wise to keep their remote work options open for employees.
Why is continuing to offer remote work good for a company? For one thing, it has a strong correlation with job satisfaction. It’s also particularly popular with employees who are also parents. I’ve been working remotely for the past 16 years, and it has been a real life saver for me as a working single mother. It has afforded me with the flexibility to attend to my family while still providing for them financially. Other perks of remote work include increased productivity and cost savings for employers.
In my opinion, remote work is here to stay (at least in some sort of hybrid state). And why shouldn’t it be? It’s a win for both employers and employees… so don’t quit that job just yet.
